He admitted to experimenting with various drugs from age 14 and smoked marijuana daily. He lives with his mother and four younger siblings. He has had sporadic contact with his father and his stepfather is incarcerated.

During his six months of placement at Ettie Lee, he struggled with aggression and non compliance. With encouragement from Ettie Lee's staff, Jay began to develop trusting relationships and was able to experience the benefits of the Ettie Lee program. The group home and day program staff, as well as the program therapist consistently worked to help Jay achieve his goal of reunifying with his family, and to develop skills to prevent him from re-offending. He willingly attended school; actively participated in groups at the day program and experienced success home passes until his reunification with his mother.

Arnold S., Robertson Memorial Home 2010

The road was tough but Arnold made it. Arnold was 14 and already had several run ins with the law. He was behind in school, thought that gang life was what he was born to live and believed the world had nothing good to offer him.

Shortly after arriving at Ettie Lee, with the support and understanding of the staff, Arnold began to see things in a new light. He enrolled in day and evening classes so that he could catch up on his credits during the regular school session. He continued his education in summer school, enrolling in both day and night classes again. Still behind on credits, he did not give up hope that he would graduate with all of his fellow students. During all of this he was also working on breaking his attachment to gangs and gang life.

He wanted to choose a better path and with the support of Ettie Lee staff, Arnold graduated high school and returned home with a new outlook on life. Although he never knew his father, his mother has raised him and his two sisters with some help from her mother and her brother-Matt's uncle. Matt, age 17, has always felt sad and alone, he says, until he started using marijuana. When asked "what does the marijuana do for you?" he replies with "Happy" and a big grin. Using marijuana made him forget about his anger, his loneliness and his problems. When his uncle died a year ago in a car accident he started smoking a lot more marijuana. His mom too became mad and upset with everything in her life after the accident. Matt's mom began to direct her anger towards Matt.

At Ettie Lee, Matt said his goals were to build a better relationship with his mother and to learn how to communicate instead of leaving the house, which is what he often did to escape conflict. Matt is so glad that Ettie Lee wants to work with him and his mother. Since arriving at the Mt. Jurupa Group Home he has shown much improvement. He is enrolled in our on-site school, has seen our psychiatrist and is in our Intensive Day Program. He and his mother now feel like they have a strong chance of resolving their grief and angst and are excited to be moving forward.

Sergio's Story

Sergio H., age 16, arrived at Ettie Lee's Robertson Memorial home in March ('10). On arrival, he seemed to have no intention of doing anything but gang bang for the rest of his life. Sergio was involved in several serious confrontations and altercations with other residents over their disrespect of his "hood."

Shortly after his second month at Ettie Lee, Sergio received his first Rock Star award for completing many credits at school. Sergio took great pride in his achievement and began to focus more on school and less on gang banging.

Sergio later told a staff member that he knows he can be whatever he wants to be, "but where I come from you have to have somebody to have your back because it's very dangerous in my neighborhood." Even with those obstacles, Sergio still decided to make a serious attempt to stop gang banging.

In June, Sergio found out that he was having a son. That seemed to have a major (positive) impact on him. He started to do extra chores to earn money to help buy a crib for his baby while continuing to excel in school.

A few days before Sergio went to court to be released from Ettie Lee, he tearfully told a staff member the story of his brother who was killed several months prior. It will be especially hard on Sergio now that he is back in his old neighborhood. "My brother was from the same gang as me and those people in my hood didn't do nothing about my brother's death - they didn't do anything to show that my brother died for the hood." Sergio says that he does not want to gang bang and he knows that if he continues to do well in school he can get out of that area.

Sergio has learned a different way of seeing things. In the beginning, gang banging was the only was he knew to survive. After realizing when he applied himself he could graduate from high school made a huge difference in his life. Sergio went home on September 8.

Sergio H., Robertson Memorial Home, 2010

Ettie Lee Holiday 2010

Orlando Is Home

My son, Orlando, has made great improvements since he came to live with me 5 years ago. He had very few high school credits at this time. He was so far behind that he had almost given up on the belief that he could graduate at all. Encouraged by the support he received from the on grounds school staff, Emmanuel started to believe in himself.

One of Ettie Lee's staff members described it as Emmanuel being able to allow the sun to shine through his clouds of doubt. Emmanuel not only started earning credits, he was earning them at an accelerated rate. It was at this time that he was transferred to Ettie Lee's North Hollywood Home (typically for older boys who are in transition to adulthood) where he would be able to recieve much needed independent living skills training.

Really motivated, and now enrolled in the local school from 7:45 AM to 6:00 PM, he was able to catch up to the other seniors and in his first semester earned straight A's! Emmanuel graduated North Hollywood High School in June 2010. Thirty days later Emmanuel was accepted into a transitional housing program where he will continue to work and grow.

to help out boys like Emmanuel and our after-care program please donate today

Tyler's Struggle... As a result, Tyler turned to drugs and became an addict, specifically a meth addict - he was actually injecting meth into his veins. He stole from his family, his friends and strangers to support his habit. It was then that Tyler was referred to Ettie Lee Youth & Family Services. After arriving at Ettie Lee's Mt. Jurupa Home, he was unsure of himself. He could not look to the future and didn't know if he would ever be welcomed back into his family...

Sober since April, Tyler has gained weight and now shoes his bright smile. His family just recently came to visit him and was amazed how well Tyler has changed for the better. For the first time in a long while, Tyler is thriving and doing exactly what he should be doing - getting grief counseling, going to school and staying out of trouble. Tyler is now looking forward to reunifying with his aunt and grandmother. Tyler has even earned the privilege of the coveted Honor Room at Mt. Jurupa due to his progress and attitude.

to help out Tyler and children like Tyler, click here to donate now

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2010/12/tylers-struggle-and-recovery.html' title='Tyler's Struggle... For Juan

My Name is Juan R. and I am from Pacoima, CA. I came to Ettie Lee from another boys home. Over there all I did was fight and smoke weed all day long. I didn't care about nothing except fighting and getting high as much as I could. I went to the halls (juvenile hall) and I missed my family because they lived so far away and they wouldn't come to visit me because I was being so bad. Some man came and saw me in the halls and said I was going to be moved to a place called John Eccles (one of Ettie Lee's homes). When I got there I met all the staff - Moana, Omar, Glenn, Anthony, Malia, Ruth, Lea, Yvonne and Shannon. At John Eccles, I learned how to control my anger and figured out why I was taking drugs. I was there for nine months and remained drug free while I was there. I stayed alcohol-free too. I'm a changed man and miss my mom and sister. I thank John Eccles for what they have shown me and I really liked being here because they treated me as a family member. Now I'm at home and using the skills they taught me and I am trying to best to remain drug free. You could say that I was a
handful. I remember lots of times I had in the homes and as I think about
it, it was really fun. I didn’t realize it then but the homes really
helped me as a young man. I have made some detours but I am grateful for
the homes and I look at my life now and I can say that at 34 I am a great man
who is a worship leader at my church. For Jorge*

Jorge* was 5 years old when he was placed in a foster home after experiencing trauma in his family. After one month in foster care, Ettie Lee was able to place him in kinship care (under the care of a relative instead of being in foster care).

The Ettie Lee therapist who cared for him reports that he hated being left alone. When left alone, he became very fearful and would search the home yelling for anyone to come to his call. Even after an adult responded, the family had a difficult time consoling him during these moments. Jorge also struggled to listen when asked to do chores or follow directions.

A little after a year of therapeutic service, Jorge is thriving in kinship care – both at home and in school. Jorge has not only overcome his fear of being left alone, he now describes what it felt like when he didn’t think anyone was there for him. He listens when asked to do his chores, follows directions and, has met his therapeutic goals. He also has received many awards, including student of the month.

*Name changed to protect youth's identity

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2010/03/why-we-work-here-for-jorge.html' title='Why We Work Here... For Miguel*

Miguel* was not happy to be placed in a group home (Diamond L Ranch) and was very defiant and would proclaim his gang status loudly. After a while, he slowly began to relax into Ettie Lee’s rules and came to understand that even he had to follow them. He still, however, was volatile and would fly into rage-full tantrums at the slightest provocation.

As his court date approached Miguel was anxious and he checked a re-checked with his probation officer to see if he was recommending his release and every time his probation officer assured him that he was. So, on the day Miguel went to court he had said all of his goodbyes to staff and peers and he was carrying his suitcase full of the belongings he had accumulated in six months. By the time his court date came around he had earned a phenomenal 40 high school credits, quit smoking marijuana, clean drug test, and he had bonded with one of the child care staff -- something Miguel tells us is unheard of for him.

The staff found it bitter sweet to see him go but we all cheered him on and wished him nothing but the best. So, imagine our surprise when Miguel came back that afternoon. The judge had decided, for reasons only he knows, that he was not impressed (his words) with Miguel’s program and he told him he was going to have to stay 6 more months, with a 3 month check in. Miguel was devastated.

Miguel considered AWOL’ing, but instead used the coping skills he learned at Ettie Lee and came to the conclusion that if he did, his mom, who has serious health issues, would be badly hurt, and when he got caught he quite possibly would be sent to the Californian Youth Authority for many more months. He used additional coping skills that allowed him to tolerate the disappointment and to accept his circumstances.

Miguel is back for at least 3 months and he has an excellent attitude. For now he is focusing on his school work and getting all of the high school credits he can so when he is released he will be on track to graduate high school.

This week Miguel applied to be a graduate level resident at Diamond L Ranch which is a position of leadership and role modeling at the home. Six months ago Miguel would have ridiculed and scorned this idea. Although not chosen to take on this role at this time, Miguel cheerfully accepted to take on a few milestones before he is ready to take on this level of responsibility. But more importantly, Miguel was able to manage the anger that has always come with life’s disappointments.

* to protect the child's confidentiality we are not using the child's name

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2010/02/why-we-work-here-for-miguel.html' title='Why We Work Here... For Frank*

Frank* came to Ettie Lee's Robertson Memorial Home in May because his father, who loves him very much, had no idea how to deal with his son's chronic negative behavior. And from the onset it seem as though Frank, 17, did not want to change the behavior that led him to Ettie Lee.

Frank struggled with marijuana use, compulsive lying, stealing and fighting. The staff at Ettie Lee attempted to enroll Frank in Ettie Lee's Charter School, but he was in two fights in the first two days of class. He was then enrolled in our local public school where he was suspended for three days on his first day of class. Frank was constantly struggling with other peers in the home as well.

Through consistent accountability and a great deal of family therapy, individual therapy, and staff support, Frank slowly began to open up and turn his behavior around. Frank cam from a very impoverished family and went without for most of his life. Many of his compulsive behaviors were based on survival instincts. The more Ettie Lee staffers helped Frank feel safe, supported and provided for, his negative behaviors decreased. The staff insisted Frank take responsibility for his actions and strive to make amends with his peers. He began to develop positive relationships. In July (2009), his behavior had improved so much he was once again able to attend Ettie Lee's Charter School. He has since received his first high school credits. Frank also earned his own room at the Robertson Memorial Home and stated so proudly that this was the first time he had ever had his own bedroom. He also takes pride in assisting our maintenance staff with such projects as painting, gardening and cleaning the rain gutters.

Since his initial placement into our care, Frank has had a lot of other "firsts" such as: going to the mall, receiving a birthday cake and having people sing Happy Birthday to him, dress clothes and nice shoes, and receiving his very own hand-made quilt.

Frank has come a long way. Frank has been able to experience feeling safe and being cared for and has learned to take responsibility for himself and his actions. Initially Frank would respond with "I didn't do it, it wasn't me!" This occurred even if he did something right in front of you. Now Frank states, "My Bad!" and searches for ways to correct his behavior. Frank still struggles but has learned quite a few coping skills while he has been with us and is making great strides in working his program.

"I'm going to use my wise-mind skills" (language used in Ettie Lee treatment plan) and "I'm a man, I don't need to participate in childish behavior."

The Robertson Memorial Home staff have laughed, cried, and supported Frank through a lot of ups and downs but are all very proud of the accomplishments Frank has made.

* to protect the child's confidentiality we are not using the child's name

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2010/01/why-we-work-at-ettie-lee-for-frank.html' title='Why We Work At Ettie Lee... For Erik*

Erik* came into Ettie Lee’s Mt. Jurupa Home after completing a six month treatment program at Optimist Boys home. After graduating successfully from Optimist, Erik enrolled in The School of the Arts in Pomona. He recalled doing well for about a month but then going into “freefall.” Erik describes the freefall as a combination of feeling alienated from his classmates, feeling overwhelmed by numerous authorities so he resorted to self-soothing behavior through marijuana use. After a positive drug test, Erik was referred to Ettie Lee. Erik was released on June 2, 2009 after completing approximately five drug-free months of treatment at Ettie Lee’s home. Ettie Lee’s After-Care program continued with Erik after completing our program. A therapist regularly met and talked with Erik after he went home. After about three weeks, however, he no longer came to the meetings and stopped returning phone calls. The After-Care team continually tried to contact him, but knowing Erik, the team suspected that such a sudden break of communication meant a relapse for Erik.

Shortly after the team closed out the treatment plan at 30 days, as per DMH (Department of Mental Health) guidelines, Erik’s mother called and, as suspected, Erik had relapsed and was no longer responding to his mother’s house rules. After the therapist had several family meetings without Erik, Erik finally called. He said he saw all of the phone messages from the therapist that his mother had placed on refrigerator and that each time he saw those messages, he “felt a shot to his heart.” Erik is now back in an independent study school, still struggling with his sobriety, but keeps regular contact with Ettie Lee’s therapist including twice weekly meetings.

Erik recently expressed interest in re-enrolling to The School of Arts. Prior to a meeting with the Dean of the school, Erik has agreed to join a teen NA 12-step meeting, work on taking more responsibility for his expulsion from the school and reflect more the underlying reasons for his marijuana use and the destructive social connections he derived from it. These actions will no doubt, demonstrate Erik’s determination to stay sober when he meets with the Dean again.

* to protect the child's confidentiality we are not using the child's name

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2009/10/why-we-work-at-ettie-lee-for-erik.html' title='Why We Work At Ettie Lee... For Robert*

Robert* came into placement at Ettie Lee Youth and Family Services in December of 2008, through LA County Probation, for stealing, property damage, and for truancy (to name a few). With his poor reading skills and his numerous truancies, Robert's grades suffered and his depression came out as anger and defiance. At the time of his placement, Robert was also having trouble with his family relationships, choosing negative peers and high-risk behaviors. Robert also had trouble with following rules. To make matters worse, Robert also suffered from a severe acne problem which was causing him to fight with his peers because of the teasing that he received. Needless to say, he was having a difficulty making friends.

As he became adjusted to living away from his family in one of our Ettie Lee homes, Robert slowly became motivated to improve his behavior and responded well to all staff members. He was given a variety of services, individual and family counseling, skills to manage his emotions, tutoring and medical help for his skin. Each month we saw progress and so did he. He showed improvement in his behaviors and adjusted very well with the other boys.

Robert's reunification with his family took place in June 2009. He lives with his mother and his two siblings and also spends time with his father and step-mother. Since he has been back at home, Ettie Lee's After-Care Program staff have continued to assist him. Robert needed to complete the community service hours he started doing while at our Ettie Lee home. Working with the After-Care team, he chose a graffiti removal service. In less than two weeks he completed nearly 60 hours of community service. Additionally, the After-Care team has also helped Robert, who was reluctant at first, to get involved in a summer reading activity program sponsored by his local library. With encouragement he has found books that are tools for a better future.

When he is home, Robert tends to his chores without needing adult direction. From laundry to preparing a meal, Robert is no longer having difficulty with taking on responsibility. During the summer he joined a local youth activity center which he attends five days per week, and Robert is getting ready to start school. He would like to do well in school and is motivated to become a better reader. Robert will sign up for a tutoring program which focuses on reading proficiency.

* to protect the child's confidentiality we are not using the child's name

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2009/09/why-we-work-at-ettie-lee-for-robert.html' title='Why We Work At Ettie Lee... Ettie Lee staff would be there to support him if he was willing to do the hard work it would take for him to change his life.

During his time with Ettie Lee Brian he took part in more than 72 drug and alcohol sessions and had more than 35 individual and family therapy sessions. He attended school daily and stayed drug free. While in placement, Brian’s best friend died from a gunshot wound. Brian remarked that, “That could have been me because we were always hanging out together.” Prior to leaving
Ettie Lee, Brian’s family moved to a safer neighborhood. There, Brian is reported to be happy, drug free, in school and getting acclimated in his new neighborhood.

*not his real name

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ettielee.blogspot.com/2009/07/why-we-work-at-ettie-lee-for-brian.html' title='Why We Work At Ettie Lee... It seems that Manny came to Ettie Lee with such a good attitude that he became a very good role model for the other boys. He would step in to correct others’ behavior and the other young men really looked up to him. The other young men even went to him for advice. Manny passed all his druh screenings and even earned the honor room at the home. At school he completed 100 hours of community service in less than a month and earned many school credits toward his graduation. Manny was with Ettie Lee for five months, from August 5 to January 28. Prior to leaving Ettie Lee Manny had a plan and wanted to change. He knew he had choices – no more gang involvment, move out of the area and go college. Our staff said he will take DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) with him and keep it on the inside. Manny turned 18 the day before he left Ettie Lee. The therapist Laurie says we can call Manny….We will. And we’ll keep you up to date on his status.

Graduation Day for Raymond

Ettie Lee staff and residents will be on hand to support our first student to graduate from the charter school operated by Opportunities for Learning and Ettie Lee on June 8, 2009.
